7 Misconceptions About Hair Extensions

Whether you’re an avid hair extension wearer or have always thought about getting them installed, here are the most common misconceptions about them.

1. “Damage-free hair extensions exist.”

One of the most common misconceptions around hair extensions is that they do not cause any damage to your hair. Although your stylist may be as gentle as possible during the installation process and while you may do your best to care for your locks, no damage free method truly exists. The truth of the matter is, you can expect some damage to happen, but it can be lessened with proper aftercare provided by your stylist.

2.“My extensions completely ruined my hair!”

Okay. We just talked about how there is no way to avoid damage when it comes to hair extensions, but they are also NOT the culprit of ruining your hair completely. If you take the time to care for them properly after you leave the salon.

Aftercare and maintenance are super important to keep your new locks looking and feeling

their best. Always be sure to receive proper instructions from your stylist, as care methods vary for every type of hair extension method.

3.“All Products Are Extensions Safe."

Honestly, this another one of the biggest misconceptions. Your stylist is going to want you to buy the product line they carry, not just because they make money, but to guarantee their work.

However, not all products are compatible with your hair extensions! If there’s anything I’ve learned through trial and error, it's that protein irritates hair extension hair. Some repair products are okay to use (like Formula 18), but most of them lead to serious tangling and matting - yikes!

Be sure to ask if the products you want to use are clear. Because you’re investing a ton of money into your weave, so make sure you don’t ruin it with the wrong products!

4.“Avoid wearing your hair up at all costs.”

Go ahead and style your hair in that super cute updo that Bella Hadid was rocking. Put your hair up in a ponytail when you go the gym. Again, this one is completely false.

The misconception that wearing your hair up while having extensions lies around the idea that the extensions themselves will be visible. When installed properly, your extensions should blend seamlessly and not be an issue when styling your hair.

Natural Beaded Rows aka NBR™is a godsend when it comes to hair extensions as they are attached by using a bead and a string for the most seamless look - it looks just like your hair!

5.“Got extensions? Say goodbye to straight hair.”

Don’t feel like rocking waves or curls today? Go ahead and straighten your hair with your extensions in place, as long as they are heat-resistant of course. NBR™are made with 100% human hair so you’ll never have to worry about burning your hair.

6.“It doesn’t matter which one you choose, ALL hair extension methods are created equal.”

Again, totally false! With so many different hair extension methods out there, they are not created equal.

From the application technique, the type of hair used, and the aftercare steps, each method is unique. Some methods include tape-ins, clip-ins, and sew-ins to name a few, which may either use synthetic or human hair.

It’s also important to know that not all extensions work for every hair type. As a consumer, make sure you do research, watch videos, read reviews, and look into each type of method.

Some key things to consider: how the hair is attached, how the hair line is treated, the stylists education, and their reputation. Not all methods are what they say they are! Make sure your stylist is educated, licensed, and experienced.

With NBR™, your extensions are customized to match your hair. This means that the hair will be dyed and cut to blend in with yours, to ensure the most seamless and natural look possible. NBR™ is not a one-size fits all like other hair extensions out there.

7.“I’m Too Old For Extensions or Long Hair.”

SUPER FALSE. I have a couple clients who are in their 50’s and some who are pushing 60’s, who ROCK long hair (one of them even has 22” long hair extensions) and wears them better than some of the 20 year old clients I have.

I’m all about it, you guys. Society tells us what we can and can’t do, what we should and shouldn’t look like, but I just say… BE YOU. DO YOU. Do what makes you feel beautiful. I feel the prettiest and most like myself with hair down to my waist.
