YOUR HAIR VS HUMIDITY: WHY IT CAUSES FRIZZ

Let’s talk about humidity. Humidity and your hair may not get along most of the time, as it usually gives people frizz and can ruin your hairstyle that you spent so much time on. You may be wondering how and why this happens and how to prevent humidity from messing with your tresses. Here’s how…

Our hair is made up of keratin, which is a type of protein, and it is also comprised of three different bonds: disulfide, hydrogen, and salt. When there are high levels of humidity in the air, this means that there is a high amount of water vapor, that your hair ends up absorbing. This happens because our hair is porous like a sponge.

Why Does Humidity Cause Frizz?

Since our hair acts like a sponge and soaks in moisture from the air, this causes the hair strand to swell and coil up. These effects take place due to the hydrogen bonds, which are responsible for the shape of your hair, being broken by the water.

In other words, if you straighten or curl your hair, the humidity in the air resets your hairs structure to how it was before styling. This why you may notice that your hair gets frizzy or curly at the ends when it’s very humid outside.

High vs Low Porosity

However, everyone can experience different effects of humidity when it comes to their hair. This all depends on whether you have high or low porosity hair.

If you have high porosity hair, this means that your hair absorbs water a lot easier and faster, but cannot retain moisture for a long period of time. On the other hand, low porosity hair is able to retain moisture a lot better, but it may be difficult for it to absorb moisture in the first place.

How Can I Protect My Hair From Humidity?

While we cannot control the weather or the temperature, there are a few ways in which you can try to prevent your hair from being affected by humidity.

✶Anti-frizz shampoo & conditioner

✶Apply an anti-frizz serum

✶Dry wet hair with a microfiber towel

✶Keratin treatment

✶Embrace your natural hair texture on humid days

✶Wear your hair up or in a braided or bun style
